So you want to start a business? 3 things you need to know!

So you’re finally ready to take the leap and dapple into the world of entrepreneurship! That’s great! Let’s make 2022 the year you finally take the plunge and make your dreams come true!

This is such an exciting time for you! I remember the day I handed over my notice of resignation to my old job and jumped into Kim & Co. with both feet. I was full of passion, motivation and had some big ideas for all the things the business could be. But, a few months in, I realized I had to slow my roll and that these big ideas weren’t going to happen overnight. So, along with that realization, here are three things I’ve learned in my journey into entrepreneurship:

You can’t do it all

Not only was I an entrepreneur and working hard to build a business, but I was also raising my family of three young children. I had to slow down because I literally could NOT do it all (and we weren’t yet in a position where we could be outsourcing tasks). So, I found help in other areas of life, like recruiting my mom to help with the kids when I had meetings and changing my work schedule to work during nap time, after the kids went to bed, and on weekends.  The double edge sword of being an entrepreneur means that you can plan some of your working hours when it suits your family’s needs best. Still, it also means that it’s working late into the night, early in the morning, or on weekends, which isn’t always ideal either, but it’s the sacrifice sometimes have to make to reach our goals.

Finding balance

Next, I had to find some balance within the business. How many clients do I need to keep money coming into the business? How much work can I take on without being overworked and still providing quality services? Can I outsource work and still make money? These are all balances I have found through working in the business and managing my workload while hubby manages the finances. Creating small goals and keeping track of your numbers (expenses and income) will help you find your balance!

Is it working?

Finally, knowing when something is working and when it isn’t. This is probably one of the hardest things to figure out as an entrepreneur. Anything from: knowing when to break up with a client, when to call it quits with a contractor, starting or stopping services or products, changing directions of the business as a whole. Some things in business work, and some just don’t, and unfortunately, it can take some time to figure it out. But, that’s not something that should ever hold you back. In DrakeCo, we’ve had plenty of things that have worked, we’ve had things that didn’t, and just recently, we decided to restructured our business and started to focus on the services that we LOVE helping our clients with (more on that coming soon!)

I share these things with you because they are important things to consider. I don’t share them with you to scare you or make you second guess your choice. Starting your own business lights a fire in you as nothing else can. It’s incredible to watch your ideas turn into services and products and to watch your dreams become a reality.

Is it hard work? Yep. I HAVE to show up every day.

Is it worth it? Yep. I WANT to show up every day.

Make 2022 the year that YOU show up. Make it the year that your dreams become your reality.
